Tuesdays With Dorie – Sour Cream Pumpkin Tart

Posted in food on November 29, 2011 by hoagiefest 2020

I’ve had enough pumpkin pie over the past week (including one of Dorie’s caramel pumpkin pies, made by yours truly), so I decided to do this in tart form. The tart was delicious and the filling got rave reviews from coworkers. Because I used a tart shell, I had some filling left over, so I baked it in custard cups – for some reason, those came out a bit grainy, but still delicious.

I posted this without the apple tart because I won’t have it done by midnight Tuesday/Wednesday, and I want to stick by “Tuesdays.” Rest assured that the second recipe will follow on Wednesday.

For posterity, a picture of the caramel pumpkin pie that I made. The crust was a disaster. Not sure where I went wrong.

Tuesdays With Dorie – Pumpkin Muffins, again

Posted in food on November 22, 2011 by hoagiefest 2020

As is tradition on Thanksgiving week, TWD has gone into a food coma and left its members with a “rewind” option. I had a breakfast function at work, and these muffins hit the spot seasonally, so I went with these.

Next week, the two-per-week mania continues.

Tuesdays With Dorie – Bittersweet Brownies and Alsatian Apple Tart

Posted in food on November 15, 2011 by hoagiefest 2020

These brownies were a bit messy – I probably could have stood to cook them a little bit longer – but they were also a big hit. My chocolate-fiend friend told me that these are the best brownies she’s ever had. Please also note, she said the same thing about Dorie’s Classic Brownies a few months ago, so it’s possible she just really likes chocolate.

Look at this tart! I’d write more about the taste, but I haven’t tasted it yet. I like apples, I like custard, and I like tarts. I have no doubts that this will be delectable.

Tuesdays With Dorie – Mini Madeleines and Butternut Squash Pie

Posted in food on November 8, 2011 by hoagiefest 2020

So the mini madeleines…did not turn out so well.

First of all, mini madeleine pans do not exist in my area so I used a full-sized madeleine pan. I baked these for only a portion of the bake time (5 min) and when I came out to check, they were already scorched.

Since Tuesdays with Dorie has become a two-recipe thing for the next few months and that’s killing me anyway, I decided not to retry the madeleines. The undersides of the burnt madeleines came out perfectly, BTW. A real shame.

The butternut squash pie came out fairly well. Pie dough and I will never truly get along, but what the pie lacks in aesthetics it makes up for in big Autumn flavor.

Have a good week. See you next one.

Tuesdays With Dorie – Honey Nut Scones and Far Breton

Posted in food on November 1, 2011 by hoagiefest 2020

The end is nigh. The taskmasters at Tuesdays With Dorie are hellbent on getting the cookbook finished in December, and so we are seeing some “double-recipe weeks” scattered in here.

First up: honey nut scones. Except, I forgot to put the nuts in. Honey scones. They were a bit dry plain, but I served them with some jams and some honey and everyone seemed to like them.

The other recipe is Far Breton. What the hell is Far Breton? I don’t know. It’s either a far or a breton. I can’t really explain it to you, and I’ve eaten half the damn thing. It’s like a pudding cake made of teafruit? I don’t know. Whatever it is, it’s really, really good. I’ll see how this goes over at work tomorrow, though. People don’t often take to slimy prune cakes.

Tuesdays With Dorie is drawing to a close, and I will not be following the bakers on their journey through the next cookbook. Instead, I will spend my Tuesdays doing all the recipes that I haven’t done from this book (January through June 2008). After that, I won’t stop baking. Without actually using the name, know that I’ll be having Tuesdays With Spoodles. I’m going to bake something – anything – that I feel like baking, preferably something new. Then I’ll post about it. Then you’ll barf.
