Tuesdays With Dorie – Toasted Almond Scones

Posted in food on February 22, 2011 by hoagiefest 2020

These scones were pretty good. I’m not sure if they came out the way they were supposed to. First of all, they’re quite ugly (surprise). Second of all, I only baked them for 10 minutes out of the suggested 25, and took them out because they were already getting dark.

My impression of the scones is that they are delicious, although I’m not positive that the consistency is appropriate secondary to my baking time issue – the few scones I’ve had have been dense and had a little crunch to them. These came out fluffy, a little bit more like a buttermilk biscuit. Thankfully they baked the whole way through, because I will eat them all!

Tuesdays With Dorie – Chocolate Oatmeal Drops

Posted in food on February 15, 2011 by hoagiefest 2020

Better late than never, and I beat the 23:59 deadline for Tuesday posting.

These cookies are pretty good. Super-chocolatey, but pretty good.

I am late to make these because of Valentine’s Day (more on that in another post), and also because I baked a birthday cake for a coworker party.

This is Dorie’s cocoa buttermilk birthday cake, previously made here, except with peanut butter icing. I made it three-layers, and the trim is the same PB icing with some cocoa mixed in.

The money shot.

TUESDAYS WITH DORIE: Bourbon Bread Pudding

Posted in food on February 8, 2011 by hoagiefest 2020

I bought bourbon for this. Thankfully, they had it in one of those little travel bottles, handy for alcoholics on the go.

I didn’t taste any specific flavor to the bourbon (and usually when one of Dorie’s recipes is flavored with booze, you can really taste it). Maybe I just don’t know what bourbon tastes like. Maybe bourbon tastes like bread. This pudding really tasted like bread.

Good, though. I probably like Dorie’s apple bread pudding better, but all bread pudding is good pudding.

Please see previous post about the Dorie Bowl, my three-recipe TWD Super Bowl adventure.

Super Bowl XLV and Dorie Bowl I both took place on the same day.

The competetors:

Chocolate chunkers (no fruit or nuts, just semisweet and white chocolate pieces)!

Tall and Creamy Cheesecake (served with strawberries and nicer looking when unmolded)!

Translucent maple tuilles!

And the fun part about the Dorie Bowl is, EVERYBODY WINS! The players! The coaches! The doctors that we pay to treat our crippling sugar-and-butter-based illnesses! The morticians! The grave robbers! And finally the worms that eat our flesh and nourish the soil, which grows our sugar cane, cocoa beans, and butter trees!

Tuesdays With Dorie – Great Grains Muffins

Oatmeal, whole wheat flour, cornmeal, sugar, maple syrup, etc.

It’s all quite good, I assure you. If you’re looking for something sweet, go next door to the candy factory.
